This is a map created by Andy Turing from a proposed Dual Sport Route. I just wanted to make sure I didn't lose a copy of it, and smugmug seems as safe a place to put it as anywhere.. Here's his description of it:
I am already working on planning the Steens trip for next year. I think I
want to shoot for mid April to late June. March will be out of the question
as much of this area will still be under snow and we are expecting a little
one that month. this will obviously be a 3 day weekend trip.
Here is the tentative rout. Those that want to come from Oregon, you can
meet us anywhere along the rout:
Boise, Idaho to Silver City, Idaho to Jordan Valley, Oregon down HWY 95 to
the Whitehorse Ranch Rd. We will take that road for a while and there is a
4WD Rd. that takes off to the North West that will drop us off at the Alvord
Desert at what the locals (me included) call the "Sand Gap" which is an old
wagon freight road. Then off across the Alvord (as fast as you want!!) to
the road to Fields and a short dip in the hot springs before turning south.
The goal for the first day is Fields.
I haven't decided on day 2 because the route we took last season had way too
much asphalt 50 miles too much!!) and the Steen's Loop Road probably won't
be open until mid August so it may be out of the question. Just remember, it
is far and few between gas stations at this point. So any suggestions to
Frenchglen and the end of day 2, would be greatly appreciated. Maybe down
into Nevada and back up through Adel, Plush and the Hart Mountain refuge,
but I don't know this area as well. There is a great campground at the
lowest gate to the steens that should be open.
From Frenchglen, on day 3, is to head for Diamond, the Round Barn, then up
to Crane where the guys from Oregon can part ways with us "easterners." From
Crane, I want to take the Crane-Venator Rd up to the Crowley Rd and then
Harper, OR. From There it is what ever way we choose to get home as long as
we get home in one piece. Go to my web site
http://myweb.cableone.net/tbernard and click on the pictures for "Steens
trip" to see our trip from last season.
Any impute on possible dates or route suggestions would be great and will be
taken to heart.
